“God still has a way of wringing good out of evi “God still has a way of wringing good out of evil.“ - MLK Jr.

Hello. I’ve missed you 💛

These past few months have been very difficult for me for a host of reasons. This past month especially, with tragedy after tragedy unfolding before all of us. I still feel the grief of Buffalo in my bones.

I sat with my copy of a Testament of Hope by Dr. King a little while ago and wondered how in the world he (and others) kept a movement for civil rights sustained when tragedy after tragedy kept knocking the wind out of them. What did he say to encourage others? What truth did he cling to, to keep hope alive for himself?

I flipped through and landed on “Eulogy for the Martyred Children,” the sermon he gave at the funeral of the 4 little Black girls killed in the 1963 white supremacist terrorist bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church.

He said a lot I’m still sitting with. One thing that stood out was that “God still has a way of wringing good out of evil. History has proven over and over again that unmerited suffering is redemptive.”

Wringing. Forceful twisting. Extracting. It reminded me of a God who promises honey from a rock for His people wandering through the wilderness. One who puts in effort to sustain and nourish us with sweetness and goodness in the midst of suffering.

For me, honey from a rock would look like action and legislation in the wake of perpetual gun violence. Wringing justice from the stained cloth of white supremacist terror. And it also looks like being reminded that history has proven over and over that redemption lies on the other side of suffering.

We are the hands and feet. Our good work will do the wringing until we hear true freedom ringing. 🍯
