“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.”
– Rosa Parks
How prepared can one be for the unexpected?
These past few weeks were filled with countless moments that rocked us collectively as a nation. As someone with a generally hopeful outlook, I’m not immune to the feelings of instability and anxiety that come with uncertainty.
This week, I decided that–regardless of what could possibly happen next in our nation or world–I needed to get steady. To do that, I had to remind myself of what is still true in the midst of all that changes. I started with a list:
- I still have people to love and be loved by.
- I’m still voting, period.
- I still have a career that I can use to make meaningful change in the world.
- I’m still passionate about several causes that will need my continued support.
- I still have hope that good things can happen.
Making this list instantly began to ground me. I was reminded that I didn’t have to be tossed around by the breaking news of the day. I didn’t have to feel like, in the words of Katy Perry, a plastic bag drifting through the wind!!
What would be on your list? Maybe you’re a caregiver dedicating your days to supporting a loved one, or you’re a teacher prepping for the back-to-school season. Maybe you’re dealing with your own internal whirlwinds and can barely think straight most days.
Whatever you’re currently holding, I want to gently remind you that you don’t have to let what’s happening around you make you lose your footing. Chaos can be disorienting, but like Toni Morrison said, “chaos contains information that can lead to knowledge–even wisdom.”
Let chaos be a signal to remember all that is still true–and let those truths ground you.
If you want my list, you can click and save the image below to print out and put on your wall, or even save to your phone to look back on.
You’re not alone in your anxiety or overwhelm. Carry what you can, remember what matters most, and keep going.
